Sholay’s Lost Climax: Thakur’s Revenge on Gabbar

Filmmaker and actor Farhan Akhtar recently shared a fascinating piece of Bollywood history, revealing that the iconic film Sholay originally had a much different climax. In the version envisioned by director Ramesh Sippy, Thakur, played by the legendary Sanjeev Kumar, personally killed Gabbar Singh, the ruthless dacoit portrayed by Amjad Khan.

Censorship During the Emergency Altered Sholay’s Fate

This dramatic scene, showcasing Thakur’s ultimate revenge, was ultimately cut by censors during the Emergency imposed in India in the mid-1970s. Akhtar explains that the prevailing political climate and censorship guidelines led to concerns about excessive violence. The filmmakers were forced to alter the ending, resulting in the version we know today, where Thakur breaks Gabbar’s legs and hands him over to the police.

A Glimpse into an Alternate Sholay Universe

Akhtar’s revelation provides a glimpse into an alternate Sholay universe, leaving fans wondering how this different ending would have impacted the film’s legacy. The original ending would have undoubtedly been a more visceral and emotionally charged conclusion to Thakur’s quest for vengeance.
